Dr Justin Maltby-Smith joined the BAFE Group in January 2022 as Group Managing Director and became the Group Chief Executive Officer in April 2025. The BAFE Group consists of BAFE Holdings, BAFE (including the BAFE Fire Safety Register) and FireQual.  

BAFE was established in 1984 and provides leading fire safety UKAS accredited third-party certification schemes. All BAFE schemes are operated under licence by UKAS accredited certification bodies. FireQual was formed in 2019 as a specialist Awarding Organisation for the fire safety sector and is regulated by Ofqual and Qualifications Scotland. FireQual develops nationally recognised Regulated Qualifications that are delivered throughout FireQual’s extensive UK wide network of approved training centres. 

Prior to this appointment Justin had an esteemed career in the electrotechnical sector holding senior positions within leading certification bodies, NAPIT and Certsure/NICEIC. Justin is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and has been a member of a variety of National Technical Standards committees since 2009. He is passionate about education and improving technical standards within the UK.
